The Institute of International Law and International Relations, currently led by doc. dr. Maruša T. Veber, conducts research and organises events in various fields of international law and international relations, including: the codification and progressive development of international law, the law of treaties, state responsibility for internationally wrongful acts, the application of international law before national courts, the peaceful settlement of disputes, proceedings before international courts and tribunals, such as the International Court of Justice, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights, the protection of human rights at the international, European and national levels, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international environmental law, international organisations, artificial intelligence, the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, international law and EU law, sanctions, international legal aspects of the Republic of Slovenia’s accession to international organisations, translations of international conventions and resolutions, and international legal issues concerning the maritime delimitation between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Croatia.

Before the Second World War, the Institute operated under the name Institute of Public International Law of the King Alexander I University. After the Second World War, it was renamed as the Institute of Public International Law of the University of Ljubljana, and today it operates within the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana.

The work of the Institute of International Law and International Relations has always been closely connected with the most topical issues of international law and international relations in the former Yugoslavia as well as in Slovenia. Over its long period of activity, the Institute has developed numerous projects, expert opinions and research studies, and has organised various meetings and exhibitions. At the same time, its scientific and research work has consistently complemented the teaching activities of the Faculty of Law in the field of international law. Following Slovenia’s independence, the importance of the Institute increased further, as the demands of the international community, particularly the European Union, created a growing need for advice and expert assistance to state authorities as well as to private legal and natural persons.

The United Nations Depository Library (DL-27) operated actively within the Institute from 1947 to 2025. During this period, it provided access to documents, monographs, serial publications and other materials of the United Nations (UN) in the fields of international law and international relations. Today, most UN documents are available in electronic form, while important resources and publications remain accessible in physical form at the premises of the Institute of International Law and International Relations and in the Library of the Faculty of Law.
