In its research and event organization, the ILIR cooperates with various international organizations and universities, including: the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the European External Action Service (EEAS), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Ghent University, the Center for International Humanitarian and Operational Law (CIHOL), the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee, the Universities Network for Children in Armed Conflicts, and the EUTOPIA Connected Community.
ILIR members are internationally recognized scholars active in numerous national and international academic associations, such as the International Law Association (ILA), the European Society of International Law (ESIL), the American Society of International Law (ASIL), the Multidisciplinary International Network on Sanctions (MINOS), the IUCN WCEL Rights of Nature Task Force, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL), and the United Nations Association of Slovenia. Researchers participate in various national, European, and international projects. They regularly publish and present their research findings in Slovenia and abroad and contribute as guest lecturers at events worldwide, with their work appearing in recognized national and international journals and with reputable publishers.

Ljubljana Sanctions Conference
(25 to 26 September 2025)
The conference was co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, the Multidisciplinary Network on Sanctions (MINOS) at Ghent University and the Centre for International Humanitarian and Operational Law at Palacký University in Olomouc. The conference brought together more than 150 participants and featured 14 panels, 2 round tables and 21 poster presentations over two days.
Responsibility to Protect in Theory and Practice

The Responsibility to Protect in Theory and Practice Conference is a biennial international and interdisciplinary forum dedicated to the Responsibility to Protect (R2P/RtoP) principle. The conference brings together scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and experts to examine the theoretical foundations and practical implementation of the R2P in preventing the core international crimes.
All-European International Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition

The Competition covers the area of international humanitarian and refugee law, as well as international criminal law. It aims to challenge its participants to solve real-world legal problems, enabling its participants to refine their legal reasoning and advocacy skills by presenting arguments before experienced judges and expert panel members.
MUNLawS Model United Nations Conference
(2013-ongoing)
MUNLawS Conference is a simulation of proceedings before various bodies and specialised agencies of the United Nations, European Union and the North Atlantic Treary Organisation. The Conference is aimed at older high school and university students, as well as young professionals. So far, more than 1500 delegates from over 40 countries of the world attended the thirteen Conferences, ultimately proving it is the leading university-level conference in the region.
Global Conference on AI and Human Rights
(2024)
The Global Conference on AI and the Right to Life brought together leading scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and experts in the field to examine the complex relationship between artificial intelligence and the protection of the right to life. As AI systems increasingly influence decision-making in areas such as healthcare, policing, justice, public administration, and policy planning, the conference provided a timely forum for discussing the legal, ethical, and human rights challenges posed by these technologies.
Contemporary Challenges of International Environmental Law Conference
(2012, 2014, 2016, 2020)
The conferences provided an international and interdisciplinary forum for examining urgent questions in environmental protection through the lens of international law. They brought together legal scholars, environmental experts, practitioners, and emerging researchers to discuss challenges such as climate change, sustainability, environmental justice, biodiversity protection, and the evolving relationship between environmental law and human rights.

The Institute's areas of focus include: the codification and progressive development of international law; the law of treaties; state responsibility for internationally wrongful acts; the application of international law before national courts; the peaceful settlement of disputes; proceedings before international courts (e.g., ICJ, CJEU, ECtHR); the protection of human rights (international, European, and national); international humanitarian law; international environmental law; international organizations; artificial intelligence; the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy; international law and EU law; international legal aspects of Slovenia's integration into international organizations; translations of international conventions and resolutions; and the maritime boundary delimitation between Slovenia and Croatia.
