The Institute for International Law and International Relations and the Slovenian Branch of the International Law Association are pleased to invite you to a guest lecture by Dr Ayla do Vale Alves (Adelaide University, Australia): The Role of Human Rights Law in International Responses to Cultural Appropriation
International responses to cultural appropriation have traditionally relied on cultural heritage law and intellectual property law. While both offer important tools, they often leave significant gaps for marginalised source communities. In this lecture, Dr Alves will explore how international human rights law can strengthen these frameworks by reframing cultural appropriation through the lens of cultural identity, property and integrity, and by expanding the protection of cultural rights through their connection with broader human rights principles.
